Key West, Florida is one of the United States’ hottest vacation spots, with thousands of tourists visiting the area each year to soak up some sun, enjoy the ocean breezes and surround themselves with tropical nature and wildlife. September is a great time to visit Key West, since the summer heat is starting to fade away and crowds get thinner as kids return to school.

If you’re planning on visiting Key West this September, there are loads of things to do! From exploring a national park to chowing down on great Mexican food, the fun is endless. Here are our top five things to do while in Key West, FL this September.

#5: Visit the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum

Ernest Hemingway and his first wife, Pauline, moved to this beautiful Spanish Colonial mansion in 1931. Since then, the house has been transformed into a museum to give tourists a glimpse into the famous author’s life.

Stop by the home and museum to see many of Hemingway’s personal belongings and European antiques, as well as numerous animal trophies and skins Hemingway collected from Africa, and to view the studio in which he wrote many of his famous books. And while you’re there, get acquainted with some of the polydactyl cats that make their home on the property!

#4: Visit sea creatures at the Key West Aquarium

Key West Aquarium is the only public aquarium in the area and was built in the early 1930s. Visit the aquarium to see some of their most popular exhibits, including the American Alligator Exhibit and the Jellyfish Exhibit. You can also learn more about marine life through their educational programs and tours.

#3: Explore nature in Dry Tortugas National Park

Dry Tortugas National Park consists of seven small islands and is accessible via boat, seaplane or ferry. The surrounding waters are filled with magnificent wildlife and coral reefs. Enjoy snorkeling or swimming in the water, or take a tour of Fort Jefferson for some history.

#2: See Key West by charter boat

Much of Key West can only be experienced on the water, so check out one of the many charter boat companies for an up-close tour of the numerous hidden coves and bays of Key West’s beautiful blue waters. Charter boats can also be paired with exciting activities such as dolphin watching, snorkeling and fishing!
